After five days of a complex rescue operation, specialists said on Thursday that they would take at least another two days to reach the twoyear-old boy who plunged down a 100-metre-deep borehole in Totalán. Julen fell down the hole, which has a diameter of just 25 centimetres, on Sunday when his family were spending the afternoon in the countryside. Since then engineers have been working on different ways to reach the boy, who is thought to be trapped below a layer of earth that dislodged from the sides of the hole as the boy fell. These have included tunnelling through the hillside and digging parallel vertical holes. Hair found among some of the soil removed from the hole tested positive for Julen’s DNA.
